From Screens to Success

With nearly 28 years in this industry and 18 years as an agency owner, I've built Hollywood Branded into a global leader in product placement, influencer marketing, celebrity endorsements, and entertainment partnerships. Our expertise in product placement and strategic brand partnerships has solidified our reputation as a trusted partner for brands worldwide. We work with every major studio and production company, and we pride ourselves on knowing how to navigate Hollywood's complex landscape to achieve the best results for our clients.

Between clients and productions, our life is never dull, as we have experienced every possible challenge and learned how to correct course when things go wrong, often due to a lack of insight and understanding by a partner who makes this already difficult partnership-building process even harder. So how exactly do we do it? In this article, Hollywood Branded offers an exclusive look into our proven strategies and provides insights to help brands understand what it takes to succeed in Hollywood.

Hollywood Branded’s Blueprint for Effective Product Placement

Structuring Deals with Contingencies

We're hired to ensure that on-screen exposure results - results in happening, results in making an impact. The first part, making sure the brand actually GETS on screen, is more than half the battle.

It's important to know that the vast majority of partnership deals, which begin with strong interest from both the production and the brand, fail because the brand partner struggles to navigate the extremely creative landscape of personalities and artists. From the start, you are on unsteady ground and success is not guaranteed.

Why? Because it's a creative process, and the world of dialed-in corporate brand marketers and emotionally driven creators is just that—a different world each operates from. That's where our team is of benefit—we understand those worlds, the languages each speaks, and their overall needs to make sure they feel safe in creating a partnership together. There are many concerns about safety here. Brands: Safe that the marketer will get all the value they can in a positive environment. Productions: Safe in that the brand won't negatively distract the viewer from the scene.

Tiered Partnership Fees

To bridge this gap between corporate and creative, we implement strategies that anticipate potential challenges and ensure smooth collaboration. One of the most critical aspects of successful product placement deals is structuring them with contingencies for "what if" scenarios. This means offering a tiered fee structure that provides multiple options for success at different levels.

Option 1 - Basic Integration:

  • Fee: $X
  • Details: This includes minimal on-screen exposure, such as a background product placement or a brief mention in a single scene. This option ensures a cost-effective entry point for brands.

Option 2 - Enhanced Integration:

  • Fee: $Y
  • Details: This option offers a more substantial on-screen presence, such as multiple scenes featuring the product, minor character interaction, or storyline integration. It provides a higher level of visibility.

Option 3 - Premium Integration:

  • Fee: $Z
  • Details: This provides the highest level of integration, including key plot involvement, character usage, and potential for co-promotional activities. This ensures maximum exposure and brand impact.

Additional Budget for Ancillary Exposures

Budget Allocation: We've developed an approach that we've found to be very successful in allocating an additional budget for ancillary add-ons, which the production can utilize to create extra exposure opportunities. This is especially useful in series where other episodes may offer authentic opportunities to reintroduce the brand based on its initial integration.

Examples:

  • Recurring Mentions: Additional scenes or mentions in subsequent episodes. This helps maintain a brand presence across multiple episodes.
  • Social Media Tie-Ins: Promotional tie-ins through the production’s social media channels leverage the production’s online reach to enhance visibility.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Content: Inclusion in behind-the-scenes features or special content releases. This provides a unique angle to showcase the brand’s involvement and takes some investment by the partner to edit and provide—but the value is tremendous. Plus, it allows the brand to help co-promote the production, bringing more viewers to the content.

Benefits of Tiered and Contingent Structures

The goal of structuring deals with tiered fees and ancillary add-on budgets is for brands to secure the partnership without risking that it goes away entirely. This allows the production to have a range of integration options, ensuring successful placements regardless of potential script changes or production challenges. This approach maintains the value of the partnership and offers multiple pathways to achieve visibility and impact.

  • Flexibility: Allows for flexibility in case the original plan cannot be executed due to creative changes. This ensures the brand still gets exposure even if the script changes.
  • Incentives for Production: Provides incentives for the production team to find alternative ways to integrate the brand, ensuring continued collaboration. This keeps the production motivated to include the brand in meaningful ways.
  • Maximized Exposure: Ensures the brand remains a part of the production, maximizing exposure even if some elements of the original deal change. This guarantees that the brand’s presence is maintained throughout the production.

New call-to-action

The Trade, Invest, Amplify Program

Here’s a quick look at each component:

1. Trade Program: This includes agency services that do not require paying a third party. Services include strategy, industry education and brand awareness, product placement, celebrity seeding, earned PR, content creation, licensing negotiation, and video editing. All things our teams of experts can do with our own relationships and skills.

For product placement, it means providing education, and providing products or services in exchange for the result - a result on screen - without paying a fee to content producers. 60% of productions do not take investment fees for product placement due to not wanting to (or not allowed by the distributor) deal with contracts or not wanting to take the time to shoot under the guidelines of the brand. This is the ONLY way to have your brand appear on screen in some of the most popular series and films - by both providing value to production in helping make the scene look more real and saving production costs.

  • Cost-Effective Entry: Allows brands to gain visibility without substantial financial investment.
  • Building Relationships: Establishes initial relationships and awareness with producers, directors, and content creators.
  • Authentic Integration: Ensures integrations are authentic and seamless.

9. Cultural Relevance and Sensitivity

  • Ensuring Cultural Relevance: For international placements, brands should ensure that their products and promotional activities are culturally relevant and sensitive to the target audience. This enhances the effectiveness of the campaign and avoids potential cultural faux pas.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Brands should strive for diversity and inclusion in their placements, ensuring representation that aligns with modern audience expectations and values.

10. Legal Safeguards

  • Adherence to Legal Guidelines: Brands must comply with all legal guidelines and regulations related to advertising, endorsements, and product placements. This includes FTC guidelines for endorsements and any relevant industry-specific regulations by brand category (here's looking at you spirit, wine, beer, cannabis, tobacco, pharma brands!).
  • Contracts and Agreements: All partnerships should be formalized through detailed contracts that outline the scope of work, deliverables, timelines, and financial commitments. This provides clarity and protects both parties.

11. Product Availability and Logistics

  • Product Samples: Brands should provide adequate product samples for use during the production. This ensures that the products are available on set and can be integrated seamlessly into the content.
  • Logistical Support: Brands need to offer logistical support, including timely delivery of products and any necessary accessories. This minimizes delays and ensures smooth execution.

12. Innovation and Creativity

  • Encouraging Creative Solutions: Brands should be open to innovative and creative solutions that enhance the integration. This might include custom scenes, special events, or unique promotional tactics that align with the content's narrative.
  • Flexibility in Creative Execution: While maintaining brand guidelines, brands should allow some flexibility in how their products are portrayed to ensure a natural fit within the content.

13. Long-term Collaboration

  • Building Long-term Relationships: Brands should view these partnerships as long-term collaborations rather than one-off transactions. This approach fosters trust, enhances the quality of placements, and can lead to more strategic opportunities over time.
  • Regular Check-ins and Updates: Scheduled check-ins and updates help keep everyone aligned and address any issues promptly. This proactive communication prevents misunderstandings and keeps the project on track.

14. Data Sharing and Confidentiality

  • Sharing Data and Insights: Brands should be willing to share relevant data and insights that can help optimize the placement. This includes audience demographics, engagement metrics, and any previous campaign results.
  • Maintaining Confidentiality: Protect sensitive information. Everything discussed about a production is privileged information.

15. Contingency Planning

  • Contingency Plans: Brands should have contingency plans in place for any unforeseen issues that might arise during the partnership. This includes backup strategies for product delivery, budget adjustments, and alternate placement options. Things happen. Often. This is a fast-moving creative process with many parts always in rotation.
