Bond’s Future: Amazon’s Takeover and 007’s Legacy
The world’s most famous spy has faced countless adversaries, but James Bond’s latest shake-up is happening behind the scenes. With Amazon MGM Studios officially taking the creative reins of the 007 franchise, longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are stepping back from their leadership roles after decades of stewardship. This marks the first time in Bond’s 60-year cinematic history that the franchise’s direction is shifting away from the Broccoli family’s tight creative control.
But what does this mean for the future of James Bond? And how did we get here in the first place? In this article, Hollywood Branded provides a retrospective look at the Bond franchise’s history, its power struggles, legal battles, and the iconic moments that have defined this legendary character, while looking to its future with Amazon.
From the Beginning: How Bond Became a Cinematic Powerhouse
The James Bond film franchise began in 1962 when producers Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman secured the rights to Ian Fleming’s novels and formed Eon Productions. Partnering with United Artists, they launched Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as the suave but deadly secret agent. With a winning formula of exotic locales, thrilling espionage, and unforgettable villains, the franchise quickly became a global phenomenon.

Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, Connery and later George Lazenby (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 1969) established 007 as an enduring figure. Connery returned one last time in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) before Roger Moore took the mantle with Live and Let Die (1973), bringing a more lighthearted take to the character. The 1980s introduced Timothy Dalton, whose grittier, Fleming-inspired portrayal of Bond was short-lived due to an unprecedented legal dispute that halted production for years.
The Turmoil That Nearly Killed Bond
Bond’s biggest battle wasn’t against Blofeld or Goldfinger but in the courtroom. Following Licence to Kill (1989), the franchise was thrown into chaos due to lawsuits between Danjaq (the holding company that owns Bond’s rights) and MGM. Danjaq sued MGM/UA for unauthorized licensing of Bond films for television, leading to a lengthy legal standoff. At the same time, MGM itself was undergoing major financial turmoil, changing ownership multiple times.
While Timothy Dalton was set to return for a third Bond film in the early ‘90s, the drawn-out legal drama put the franchise on ice for six years. By the time the dust settled, Dalton walked away, paving the way for Pierce Brosnan’s debut in GoldenEye (1995), which revitalized the series.

Meanwhile, a separate legal battle was brewing over Bond’s iconic villains. Producer Kevin McClory, who had won the rights to elements of Thunderball back in the 1960s, spent decades challenging Eon Productions, culminating in his independent Bond film, Never Say Never Again (1983), starring Connery. The legal disputes over the use of Blofeld and SPECTRE kept the villain off the screen until Spectre (2015) when Eon finally regained full rights.
Bond in the 21st Century: Reinvention and Revival
After Brosnan’s tenure ended with Die Another Day (2002), the franchise reinvented itself with Casino Royale (2006), casting Daniel Craig as a more rugged, emotional, and modern Bond. This era brought a shift in tone, emphasizing raw realism and deeper character development. Skyfall (2012) became the highest-grossing Bond film at the time, earning over $1 billion worldwide and proving that 007 was still a force to be reckoned with.Image Credit: 007.com
However, by the time Craig bowed out with No Time to Die (2021), questions lingered about where Bond would go next. The traditional studio structure was shifting, and streaming giants like Amazon were increasingly influencing the film industry.
Amazon Takes Over: What’s Next for 007?
In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, officially bringing James Bond under its expanding empire. Now, as Broccoli and Wilson step back, Amazon MGM Studios is expected to take a more active role in shaping Bond’s future. While Eon Productions still holds some decision-making power, this marks an unprecedented shift in how the franchise is managed.
The big question: will Bond stay true to its cinematic roots, or will Amazon leverage its streaming power to push the character in new directions? Could we see a Bond TV series? A more interconnected 007 universe? Or will the classic theatrical release model remain untouched?

Speculation is already swirling about who will step into Bond’s tuxedo next. Will the franchise continue Craig’s grounded realism, or will it embrace a more fantastical, high-tech direction akin to the Brosnan era? And with Amazon’s resources, could we see bigger-budget Bond films with even more extravagant action set pieces?
The Future: Evolution or Revolution?
One thing is certain: James Bond has survived corporate battles, legal fights, and industry shifts before, and he’s always emerged stronger. While some fans are wary of Amazon’s involvement, others see it as an opportunity for reinvention. Will 007 adapt to the modern streaming landscape, or will it double down on the traditional blockbuster experience?
As Bond himself would say, “Never say never.”
