TikTok and Soundcloud

TikTok hasn't always been the online hub for new songs and talented artists. For years this scene has been dominated by the social media app Soundcloud as it provides a free accessible platform for ambitious artists to share their music with eager listeners. Musicians have also been drawn to Soundcloud due to the virality and recognition displayed on the app. Any artist had the potential to upload their song on the app and become an overnight success by the very next day. Soundcloud's “golden era” undoubtedly came in the mid to late 2010s as top charting artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Bryson Tiller, Post Malone, and Juice WRLD partially owe their musical success stories to this creator-friendly streaming service.

Soundcloud was renowned as it curated towards both the casual music enthusiast along with professionals within the music industry. Users such as college students looking for new music and record label A&Rs alike flocked to Soundcloud for new talent, as their platform was unmatched for underground music.

Soundcloud was imperative for young musicians to generate traction around their art. However, Soundcloud has seen quite a drop off in cultural relevance since the uprising of TikTok which seems to have almost, accidentally built upon SoundCloud's success and surpassed Soundcloud as the “go to” platform for new music lovers both conventional and professional listeners.

TikTok has changed how we consume entertainment and provides an alternative path for musician discovery. Due to the app's ability to perpetuate virality like no other social media platform along with allowing billions of users the ability to use music snippets to boost their own content creation, it's a musical gold mine for growth and artist breakthrough. TikTok provides the same wave of new talent as Soundcloud with the shareability and influencer-backed legitimacy of Instagram.

It might seem that through this blog I am glazing TikTok for its vast capabilities however when and record label A&R in Los Angeles can sign an artist that they first found off of Tikok uploaded from a frat boy in Wisconsin or from a TikTok posted from a local coffee shop in Sydney Australia it's hard not to praise that kind global integration.
