DARK SHADOWS
Dark Shadows (2012) is a Tim Burton-directed film directed based on the gothic soap opera of the same name (1966 to 1971). Johnny Depp plays the lead role of Barnabas Collins, a man who, in the 18th century, was turned into a vampire and buried alive by vengeful witch Angelique Bouchard after she realized Barnabus was in love with someone else. After being accidentally freed at a construction site in the 1970s, Barnabas returns to his family's now decrepit estate, encountering dysfunctional descendants and, to his dismay, the witch Angelique Bouchard who's still looking for revenge.
Helena Bonham Carter stars alongside Depp as Dr. Julia Hoffman, a live-in psychiatrist for the family. Her curiosity and obsession with Barnabus leads to a peculiar relationship between the two, and paired with the femme fatale nature of Angelique, and the overall film's blend of comedy, horror, and supernatural elements, Dark Shadows truly is one of the most enjoyable installments in The Gothic Trinity's filmography. Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Jackie Earle Haley round out the ensemble cast. You can check out the trailer HERE.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
The 2011 film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" takes on a much darker and more surreal interpretation than its predeceasing animated counterpart in the unique and quirky manner made famous by Tim Burton. Alice in Wonderland follows Mia Wasikowska as the titular Alice who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl in her dreams - reuniting with her old friends the Mad Hatter (played by Johnny Depp), the Cheshire Cat, and the White Rabbit. Not too long into her journey, Alice learns she is prophesied to end the reign of terror of the Red Queen (played by Helena Bonham Carter) and free the Wonderland natives by slaying the Queen's fearsome pet Jabberwocky.
Though the film was originally billed to be aimed at children, Burton's reinterpretation through an eccentric lens creates an entertaining and relatable film that centers on self-discovery, facing challenges, and overcoming doubts and fears. Depp and Bonham Carter star as the two most engaging characters of the film, and Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, Christopher Lee, and Imelda Staunton round out the ensemble cast. You can check out the trailer HERE. Alice in Wonderland went on have a 2016 sequel titled Alice Through the Looking Glass, where Alice returns to Wonderland to help the Mad Hatter find his family. Depp and Bonham Carter reprise their roles in the sequel, and you can check out the trailer HERE.

CORPSE BRIDE
Corpse Bride (2005) is an enchanting, macabre stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson. Set in two worlds - a Victorian-era town and the eerie Land of the Dead - Corpse Bride follows the misadventures of Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp), a nervous young man about to enter into an arranged marriage to Victoria Everglot in an effort to raise the social class of Victor's family while restoring the wealth of Victoria's. One day while rehearsing in the forest, Victor accidentally becomes engaged to Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter), a literal corpse bride and lovelorn woman longing for a proper wedding after she was murdered before her marriage.
Spirited away to the Land of the Dead, Victor discovers the truth about Emily's tragic past, and struggles to uphold his commitment to his living fiancée, Victoria. Meanwhile, sinister forces loom in the world of the living as Victoria's desperate parents scheme to marry her off to the awful Lord Bittern. Across the film, viewers experience the themes of love, loyalty, and redemption alongside the characters, and are entranced by the whimsy yet dark and haunting style only Burton can convey (plus characters only Depp and Bonham Carter could voice so perfectly!). The voice cast also features Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, Paul Whitehouse, Joanna Lumley, Albert Finney, and Christopher Lee. You can check out the trailer HERE.

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
The 2007 film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's renowned musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street offers a grim take on the original stage production, being infused with the signature dark, gothic style made famous and beloved by director Tim Burton. Sweeney Todd follows the titular vengeful barber, played by Johnny Depp, who returns to London seeking retribution against a corrupt judge who wronged him. Todd is joined by fellow maniac Mrs. Lovett (played by Helena Bonham Carter) - a baker with her own motivations for revenge and chaos.
Together, the duo embarks on a killing spree - with Sweeney using his barber talents and razor to slay those in his path. As the body count rises, Todd's thirst for revenge consumes him, leading to a devastating climax. Despite the film's gruesome subject matter, Burton's adaptation still maintains a comedic tone paired with a captivating score. Together, Depp and Bonham Carter deliver mature and terrifying yet captivating performances, supported by a talented ensemble cast including Timothy Spall, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
