High-Tech: Immersive Concert Magic

Las Vegas, a city renowned for its dazzling architecture and unparalleled entertainment, is home to a new marvel that has taken the world by storm—the awe-inspiring Sphere. This colossal spherical wonder, unlike any other, has captured the imagination of all who have laid eyes on it.

But what makes The Sphere truly extraordinary goes beyond its sheer size and structural innovation. It represents a new era of entertainment and branding possibilities in the heart of Las Vegas. In this article, Hollywood Branded dives into the incredible world of The Sphere, and how it will become a sought-after canvas for brand partnerships and unforgettable experiences.

U2 The Sphere Hollywood Branded

A Night With U2

I had the opportunity to experience The Sphere in all its glory when I attended the U2 concert there this weekend, and it resulted in an unforgettable experience.

What an absolutely amazing concert it was! If you are like me, always busy running a thousand miles a minute, you might not spend much time checking out the details of experiences you're about to embark on.  In this case, I didn't check out any of the online videos or news teasing what they were saying was the greatest concert experience of all time.

In fact, I had very low expectations other than that it would likely be similar to the many many other U2 concerts I've been to. It's my husband's top favorite touring band - he's been to something like over 30 of their concerts, seeing them 2 to 4 times per tour.  The first U2 concerts I went to were when our client BlackBerry sponsored the tour in 2009.  The handful plus of U2 concerts I've attended since then were all great music - but nothing like this.

For even those not stoned in cannabis-friendly Vegas, it was one giant mind-blowing visual trip of a show.

Our seats were up pretty high, in section 309 (row 20, seats 3 and 4 to be exact). However, The Sphere is built to make even the highest sections feel magical, and yes, very very steep! Those with a fear of heights might second-think sitting any higher than the first or second level.

The stage was a simple square, with the four band members positioned evenly throughout the space. Lighting trusses flanked the rear, and were incorporated through backlighting to cast shadows up the walls. The sound was immersive, with speakers built behind the walls and able to be seen in certain lighting.  The visual effects were awe-inspiring and stunning, with a spiritualism built within the design with the feel of mandalas and symbols.

This concert experience has forever ruined other concerts for me. The ability to have multi-story images of the band projected at eye level in front of you is nothing short of spectacular. You feel like you are up close and personal - and you actually start to prefer to watch the walls versus the musicians far below.

The Band Choice Was Very Specifically Made

The Sphere chose to open with one of the most internationally recognized bands in the world - U2. This band choice also allowed for a very soft easy opening experience, as the average age of attendees is definitely 45 plus versus raging teen groups of Taylor Swift fans. Most people stay seated throughout the concert until the encore if that helps paint the picture.  Most sat staring enthralled at the immersive digital displays.

Politeness abounded, and even the woman in front of me asked very very (too so) sweetly if I would mind her standing and dancing. I'm sure if I had said yes I minded, she still would have stood and swayed and bounced, but hey, she asked. So my photos typically have an arm in them. Oh well.

Polite workers were stationed everywhere - first nicely sending me back to my hotel room with my non-regulation-sized purse before I left the Venetian property, and preempting a required secondary long walk back through connected hallways. Anything over 6x6 is a no-go by the way.   Other workers helped re-direct me to the actual bathroom when I first followed signs for the 2 outlined people in a square box sign.  Which turned out to be the elevator.

The lighted futuristic "W" for "women" that was supposed to direct me to the actual restroom was a little too off-the-norm to not only me but seemingly tides of women who were just as confused, resulting in workers marching women back and forth across the room from elevator to bathroom door.

Internet which is touted as being free - is non-existent by the way, once you are seated, with a throttle put in place on the attendee's ability to stream or post anything.

Incredible Construction

Standing tall at a staggering 366 feet and spanning 516 feet in width, The Sphere is adorned with an impressive 580,000 square feet of LED display, making it home to the world's largest screen. Constructing such a curved wonder wasn't without its challenges, and I read that the key lay in finding ways to support the structure until it could support itself. The dome, where the auditorium resides, relies on 32 trusses, each weighing a whopping 100 tons, to maintain stability.

Above the dome lies an exosphere with digital images shared 24/7.  Standing 30 percent taller than the hidden digital world within, the sheer volume of concrete and LEDs needed for this is mind-boggling. Inside, The Sphere's 16K resolution screen spans 160,000 square feet, making it the world's largest high-resolution screen.

The precision required for its construction is astonishing. With 189 million diodes across the sphere which is the size of two soccer pitches, precision was paramount, and no diode could be out of place by more than the thickness of a blade of grass. A blade of grass - that's insane.

The external screen posed its own set of challenges due to the exposure to the elements. The solution involved organizing the LEDs into black-silicone sealed pucks of 48. A staggering 1.23 million of these pucks adorn the exterior, and what's truly ingenious is their easy replaceability if they malfunction. A simple push/pop/twist mechanism makes installation and removal a breeze.

I'd Go Again

Vegas for me is usually a work-fueled trip at one trade show conference or another, and I've counted it up that I've spent over a year of my life in the city. This was the first time in a long while that it was simply about great food (shout out to Tao and Matteo's) and an awesome music experience.

The U2 concert at The Sphere in Las Vegas was a perfect blend of iconic music and cutting-edge technology, a true testament to the magic of this incredible venue. Just like The Sphere itself, the concert experience was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime. It's not just a concert; it's a technical masterpiece of an experience that has forever altered the way we see live music.  Major cities around the world will be building these - and it will be interesting to see how this new almost Imax experience can translate into the movies too.

Las Vegas has once again proven itself as a hub for awe-inspiring experiences, and The Sphere is at the forefront of this entertainment revolution.  It's also the perfect opportunity for brand partnerships. Keep on reading to learn how brands can work with music artists for residencies.
