Navigating the Aftermath

Wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, leaving tens of thousands of acres scorched, homes destroyed, and families displaced. Communities from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena and beyond are ravaged, with no sign of the fires slowing. While our HB team remains safe, some have been forced to evacuate, and many of our families and friends have lost everything.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from around the world and invite you to send thoughts of hope and strength to those affected by this tragedy. In this article, Hollywood Branded explores the devastating impact of the Los Angeles wildfires, offering ways to support victims and providing practical recovery advice for those affected.

This was what 6:30 am Wednesday looked like in Burbank, where our team got stuck overnight on a madcap mis-adventure when trying to get to Las Vegas for CES - with the smoke from Altadena and Pasadena covering the foothills. I'll save that story for next week.

Navigating Unthinkable Challenges: Insights for Fire Victims

Before last Tuesday, no one could have imagined fires sweeping down from the hillsides of Malibu, crossing the 405, and leaving a devastating trail from ocean to freeway - and in other communities within LA County. Yet, this is now our reality, a stark reminder that we live in a world with risks we didn’t fully comprehend before.

One of the HB extended team members, Hermosa Beach contractor Rick Koenig, shared his practical advice for those impacted by the fires, which I thought might help others navigate this challenging time. If you know someone affected, please consider sharing these valuable tips.

Action Plan for Fire Victims

Start with the Small List:

  1. Get a PO Box. Forward your mail to ensure you don’t miss any critical correspondence.
  2. Search for a Long-Term Rental. Work with your insurance to find a comfortable place you like. Insurance should cover a comparable property, as you may be living there for 1–2 years.
  3. Buy Essential Gear. Invest in sturdy boots, gloves, and shovels to begin cleanup efforts.
  4. Create a Personal Property List. Start listing lost belongings as they come to mind. Use your phone or a notebook to jot down memories—this process can be emotional but is crucial for insurance claims.
  5. Save Receipts. “Loss of Use” insurance often covers incidentals like toiletries, chargers, and other daily essentials.
  6. Ask for Discounts. Many stores offer discounts to fire victims—don’t hesitate to explain your situation.
  7. Let People Help. Allow friends and family to assist with errands or provide comfort items.

The Big List:

  1. Register with Aid Organizations. Sign up with shelters, Red Cross, FEMA, and other agencies. These registrations are vital for accessing support and aid.
  2. Trigger “Loss of Use” with Insurance. Contact your insurance provider to activate immediate funds for essentials and to begin the claims process.
  3. Forward All Mail. Use your PO Box as the address for forms and correspondence.
  4. Document Belongings. Organize by room and list replacement costs—not sale prices. Overlisting beyond policy limits may benefit your tax claim.
  5. Handle Utilities. Freeze or cancel services like electricity, gas, and subscriptions. Update your mailing address for newspapers and other deliveries.
  6. Update Other Insurance Policies. Notify car and specialty insurers as needed.
  7. Prepare for Permits.Debris Removal: Likely requires a permit; insurance should cover this.Erosion Control: Especially for hillside properties.Temporary Power and Trailer Permits: Useful during rebuilding.
  8. Understand Tax Benefits. Losses beyond insurance payouts may be tax-deductible. Consult a tax professional for details.
  9. Network with Others. Connect with fellow fire victims. Shared experiences and resources can ease the overwhelming recovery process.

This comprehensive guide can be a lifeline for those impacted, offering clear first steps toward recovery.
